About Us
Forensic Scientists with the Texas Department of Public Safety (once known as Criminalists, renamed to forensic scientists by the 78th Texas Legislature) provide the Texas DPS and all other Texas law enforcement agencies with the latest scientific techniques used to investigate and solve crimes. Forensic Scientists serve under two divisions, Criminal Law Enforcement and Texas Highway Patrol. Forensic Scientists under the Criminal Law Enforcement Division are found in the Crime Laboratory Service, which has approximately 187 Forensic Scientists distributed throughout Texas in twelve regional laboratories and in the Austin headquarters laboratory. Forensic Scientists under the Texas Highway Patrol Division are found in the Breath Alcohol Testing Bureau which has approximately 30 Forensic Scientists throughout the state. The Texas DPS Criminalist Association represents all Forensic Scientists and their management to support their efforts to make the Department of Public Safety the premier source of forensic services in the state of Texas.
